Over the years Warner Bros has enthralled fans with various genres of movies that have left them with some memorable experiences. Movies like Hangover, The Mask, Horrible Bosses and We’re The Millers have made the audience go laughing their guts out and made them forget their daily troubles. But seems like when WB and DC come together, their movies get a dark, serious tone to them. This can be observed in a filmography that includes: Catwoman, The Dark Knight trilogy and Man of Steel. Even the trailers of their upcoming films; Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad sport the same dark side without a tinge of humorous element to it. The background score during the trailer of Suicide Squad certainly gives an eerie feeling. The trailer that generated a lot of buzz also brought WB some negative reviews which it might have not expected especially for the ‘Crown Prince of Crime’ aka Joker essayed by Jared Leto.
Post the trailer; a lot of fans have been requesting DC to incorporate a few gags and laughs in their movies ŕ la Marvel Cinematic Universe. MCU offerings like X Men, Iron Man, The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, to name a few, have always had some rib tickling moments to lighten the mood at important conjunctures in the storyline. Delivering a light humorous line at the correct time makes the audience remember it for a long time. We have always known Iron Man for his witty one-liners, even when engaged in a combat. That’s the kind of characteristics WB needs to bring about to please audience across generations.
Going by recent statements made by New Line Cinema’s president the ‘other comic universe’ has heard the voice of its fans and will act on it appropriately. There is ‘Shazam’ which is based on the DC comic character Captain Marvel in the pipeline; where the story is about a boy named Billy Watson who turns into an adult superhero after saying the word Shazam – the name of the wizard who bestowed him with powers and acronym for the sources of his greatest abilities (wisdom of Solomon, strength of Hercules, stamina of Atlas, power of Zeus, courage of Achilles and speed of Mercury). The movie is set to release in 2019 starring Dwayne Johnson playing the anti-hero Black Adam in the film, which is being made by New Line Cinema – a subsidiary of Warner Bros.
We can certainly expect Shazam to have its lighter moments with Darren Lemke on board as scribe, with earlier accomplishments: Shrek Forever After, Turbo and the 2015 horror comedy Goosebumps. If this movie does manage to bring in the numbers then there are high chances to see more light hearted movies coming from the WB-DC stable, apart from the popular Man of Steel and The Dark Knight spin-offs.
