FunPlus Phoenix wins the ‘League of Legends’ World Championship finals

FunPlus Phoenix (FPX), a team from China defeated European rivals G2 Esports won the  League of Legends World Championship finals and bagged more than $2 million however the last year’s prize pool which was totalled up to $6.45 million.

 

FPXruled over the favourites G2 Esports in all three of their games and won the championship. G2 Esports is quite a popular esports team who represented Europe, a region that won the championship in 2011 when the games first started but haven’t secured a victory at Worlds since then.

Relatively FPX is a newer group that formed in 2018, represented China, which had a team win the crown last year.

Every year League of Legends, puts on a show at its World Championship esports finals. In 2017, it flew a giant dragon into a bird’s nest during during the Beijing finals using augmented reality. Last year, it had a virtual Korean pop band. This year, the events team has opted for hologram-like projections.

After the game FPX member Doinb, said, “Before this, a lot of people said that a mid laner that played my playstyle doesn’t deserve to win the championship, but I think I finally proved that I deserved it.”

The European team were slight favourites ahead of the match, having not lost a tournament match all year.

But FPX dominated from start to finish to win the five-game series 3-0, thanks to an inspired performance led by Korean captain Kim ‘Doinb’ Tae-sang.In addition to that FPX dominance was most clear in the battle between Gao “Tian” Tian-Liang and Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski, which earned Tian the title of Most Valuable Player.

Riot Games CEO Nicolo Laurent described the finals as ”the biggest event in the history of eSports”, with an estimated 100 million people around the world watching the finals.
