Deadpool Review: Everything that a ‘super’ hero is not

The anti hero Marvel character movie, Deadpool has set its foot in the Indian theatres and it’s not exactly how a fan would like to experience it. The “Merc with a Mouth” who’s infamous for breaking the fourth wall that’s used by writers to create a humorous take has been toned down to quite an extent for the Indian audiences. Though the film is R rated and only 18 plus audience will get to watch it, many portions of the film have been cut down by the censor board which is the biggest let down as the profanity, nudity and the violence that Deadpool is known for has been cut/beeped out.

Leaving that apart, the movie is simply hilarious, action packed, original and to some extent we can call it a romantic one as well, with of course (Spoiler alert) Marvel comic universe demi-god ‘Stan Lee’ surprising us with his cameo appearance! Right from the word GO till the END, there isn’t a single moment wherein the audience will get bored. Throughout the movie, though story goes back and forth in time describing life of Wade Wilson before he became Deadpool, there’s a continuity in it and doesn’t leave the viewers confused.

In terms of the storyline, there’s nothing new in it but the way it has been portrayed is what is surprising. We have previously seen superhero movies where the lead character saves the day from the monstrosity and evil plans of the bad guys, but over here our lead character, Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), doesn’t proclaim himself as a hero but enforces himself as “a bad guy who gets to … worse guys.” Not revealing much about the plotline, here’s the synopsis of the film: Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

The movie holds several high notes and though few characters didn’t have much presence on the screen, they managed to grab the viewer’s attention. Wade’s bartender friend, Weasel (T.J.Miller) delivers some insanely funny dialogues and stands by his side through thick and thin situations. Another character that managed to make his spot was Dopinder (Karan Soni), a taxi driver who with his tragic love story manages to enthrall the audiences.

Reynolds has delivered an amazing  performance through his witty, slapstick character, Wade as he’s seen not losing his sense of humour even after going through the tortuous mutation experiment subjected to him. Even during intense scenes, the humour element is not lost which could be observed during the final battle against Ajax (Ed Skrein) where he and Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) are seen romancing around for few seconds. Reynolds didn’t shy away from cracking jokes on his previous works (some of them have been a box office flop). We can spot several inside jokes like which only a true Marvel fan would get it. The best part of the movie was the fact that Reynolds is seen interacting with the audiences which is quite unusual as it’s not often that we get to witness this on big screens.

The seamless action packed, gory visuals has been provided by WETA Digital, Rodeo FX, Luma Pictures, Image Engine, Atomic Fiction, Match the Motion, Digiscope, Blur Studio and Digital Domain. Also the character, Colossus has been entirely computer generated and we can observe animation used in a small part of the film where random animals are seen dancing and walking around Vanessa. The movie has been entirely cut using the Adobe Premier Pro CC software.

20th Century Fox’s strategy to focus on the smaller comic heroes seems to be benefiting them as Deadpool is winning hearts across the globe and even before the launch of the movie, Fox had declared that it’s going to get a sequel. (Spoiler alert) And though post the credit scene, Deadpool mocks about the film not getting a sequel due to budgetary reasons, he does disclose that the beloved X-Men character known as Cable will be prominently featured in Deadpool 2.

Director Tim Miller has done a commendable job and writers like Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, with their witty dialogues and humour, have tried to keep the character remain true to its comic roots. Everyone in the film, right from actors to directors to producers have done an amazing work and have left no stones unturned to give their best.

To witness the magic of Deadpool, it’s advisable to watch it in IMAX or in theatres that has Dolby Atmos sound system.
