Vaibhav More Films Animated Promo for ‘Terror of Horror’ Series Nabs PromaxBDA India Gold Award: Making of the Promo

Applause!! A 25 second animation short, ‘Terror of Horror’, created in a span of 5 days time by Vaibhav More Films for Sonic Nickelodeon of Viacom 18 has clinched this year’s PromaxBDA India Gold Award in the category of Best Programme Title Sequence.

Terror of Horror is an animated series featuring horror cartoons, which currently airs on Sonic Nickelodeon. Vaibhav More films was approached last year by Sonic Nickelodeon producer Girish Joshi for creating this promo.

For Vaibhav More, the founder of Vaibhav more films, who has directed, animated and edited this short feels that executing this short was an amazing experience and he nods to the fact that he is happy that he could crack the horror genre pretty well.

Speaking to AnimationXpress.com’s Zeenia Boatwala about this win, Vaibhav More, Founder of Vaibhav More Films, shares, “Happy with this achievement, but for me every project of mine is an award itself and I would truly like to thank Girish Joshi and Suchita Karmarkar, on air promo head of Nick.”

The brief given to Vaibhav more was to make a short which looks scary and unreal and the best part here is that Girish gave complete freedom of choice to Vaibhav for finalizing the entire look and feel of the promo.

“Horror is rarely attempted in the animation medium and as I was always inspired by the artworks of great Tim Burton, I wanted to bring in the feel of his artworks into this promo

A blend of mix animation medium including 3D and 2D, this short is given a pure black and white color treatment and the short was completed by Vaibhav More and his colleague Prashant Shahane. The characters in this short are 3D animated whereas the backgrounds and some props are brought out with the help of 2D medium.

He adds, “I always love to explore different art and animation styles and I was happy that I could experiment my ideas in this project and then decided on a story line that would circle around the characters of a magician, an evil cat and a scary fish”

Vaibhav finished finalizing the design of this short in a single day and when asked him whether scaring the audience takes a lot of effort, he asserts, “Well, very true! Scaring audiences does become pain staking as you need to imagine the reactions of the audiences and then go on with finalizing the story graph.”

Adds further, “But for this short, the objective was to demonstrate scariness but in a funnier manner as it is a short made for kids and we really didn’t want to scare them to the core.”

Finalizing on an animation medium has to be a top priority as the story telling and the animation medium should compliment each other. Vaibhav also agrees to this thought and shares, “As a medium, I appreciate all of them, but the choice of using 3D and 2D together was used by me as with 3D, you can play around with camera moves and lighting and this in turn adds more value to your story telling and with blending 2D the vision was to achieve the desired look and feel of horror films.”

So what is the most noteworthy approach that one should follow while creating such a short, Vaibhav informs on this by saying. “It has to be Story and Story Board! These are the two main ingredients that need crucial attention. I believe every story is good if it is told interestingly.

On the closing note, Vaibhav has something interesting to say, in words of Steve Jobs I wish to “STAY HUNGRY, STAY FOOLISH” and keep developing myself with every project that comes to us.”
