Netflix has picked up the global streaming rights for animated film, Wish Dragon and released the first look. The feature is an international co-production between Sony Pictures Animation (SPA) and several studios in China. While the concept art made the rounds in 2018, and the makers hoped to finish the project in 2019, due to some undisclosed reasons, it was deferred until 2021 and released on 15 January in China (Chinese dub) with English subtitles.
Sony Pictures Animation’s Wish Dragon, follows Din (probably influenced by Aladdin), a working-class college student with big dreams but small means, struggling with his single mom to balance school and a food delivery side-job. Things change when he comes into possession of a jade teapot containing Long, a cynical but all-powerful dragon capable of granting wishes. Together, they embark on a hilarious adventure through modern-day Shanghai in pursuit of Din’s long-lost childhood friend, Lina who moves in different circles now. Their journey forces them to answer some of life’s biggest questions, because, when you can wish for anything, you have to decide what really matters…and someone else is after the teapot.
Written and directed by Chris Appelhans, the SPA animated feature is produced by Aron Warner, Chris Bremble, Jackie Chan. Wish Dragon stars John Cho, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Jimmy Wong, Constance Wu, Will Yun Lee, Jimmy O’Yang, Aaron Yoo, Bobby Lee and Ronnie Chieng as the notable voice cast. Wish Dragon lands on Netflix on 11 June.
